Auto-assign a Role To a Newly Registered User

Recently we got a reguest from our client: can you automatically assign a role to a newly registered user and assign him to a project? I thought: "There must be a plugin for that". It turned out there wasn't and I was even more surprised when I found out why...
A simple Google search will give you links to forum posts such as:
Automatically add user to project and assign role?
Auto assign a role to new registered user
Auto assign new user to role/group/project?
But no-one has a solution as to how to assign a newly registered user a particular role. Then it hit me. Of course! Roles are tied to a project so you would have to assign a new user to a project and to a role on that project. Not to mention that any user is regarded as a non-member. Any automation in this regard would probably cause a mess.
